Our Sunset Coast
A Vision of white pristine beaches rolling alongside the beautiful Indian Ocean is but a 5 minute drive from the Joondalup City Hotel
and the very heart of the City of
Joondalup itself. Not only are these beaches kept safe under the watchful eye of the WA Surf Life Saving teams but the entire Sunset Coast is also conveniently connected via one long, well designed and beautifully maintained cycle path.
This cycle path starts just North of the Joondalup area and continues all the way South past the city of Perth.
One of the more popular sea-side attractions and tourist destinations is The Hillary's Boat Harbour; Located only 11 minutes drive from The Joondalup City Hotel, this bustling boardwalk is filled with cafe's, bars, tourist shops and some of the best restaurants North of Perth.
Hillary's Boat Harbour is also home to the famous AQWA aquarium which holds the worlds largest collection of Western Australian marine life.
The History of "Joondalup"
In 1838, prolific explorer of Western Australia, George Grey set up camp near Lake Joondalup; records show friendly relations with the traditional owners, the Yellagonga mob of the Noongar people.
The name 'Joondalup' is a Noongar Aboriginal believed to mean 'place of shining' in reference to Lake Joondalup.
Little white settlement occurred, with Joondalup being part of the stock trail frequented by some early settlers, such as the Clarkson brothers and in later years part of a rural and market garden area, feeding Perth. In 1977 Act in Parliament on was proclaimed and in 1979, the Shire of Wanneroo Administration Centre in Joondalup officially opened, followed by the opening of Wanneroo Hospital Joondalup Health Campus in 1980.
By 2002, Joondalup housed the WA Police Academy, the Joondalup Campus of Edith Cowan University; Joondalup Arena; Joondalup Civic Chambers and Public Library; Joondalup Police Station and Courthouse; Joondalup Country Club and Golf Course as well as schools and major shopping centres. The main Freeway and rail lines service Joondalup from Perth.
